JBay Java Setlist 2009-01-11

This is part of a blog carnival that Fred McKinnon and co. celebrate each week to encourage networking and sharing of what we’re all doing in our worship services. You definitely want to check out this collaborating community.

Walk-in: Your Grace is Enough (CD)

Welcome & Announcements

Psalm 131:2 But I have stilled a quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me.

Read as a poem:
Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
To guide the future, as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.

*Offering - We offer all our sacrifices – time, money, worship, talents - to Him in thanksgiving for who He is and all He has done for us*

In Christ Alone – verses 1 & 2

*Prayer for offering*

On New Year’s Eve, Pastor Don spoke about us 'Showing others our Hope'.
Powerpoint - Show me your HOPE – background music - God of Justice (We must go)
~ I used images of people that the congregation may come across and asked them to think about what showing them their hope might look like...a smile...a hot meal...a thank you...a donation to an organisation to take care of them...

Matthew 25: 35-36
… I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

Hope is distinct from positive thinking and optimism. We have hope because of WHO we worship.

Hebrews 12: 2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Medley:
Jesus, Messiah - Verse 1 / PreChorus / Chorus / Verse 2 / Bridge (all our hope)
God of this City – PreChorus (there is no-one like our God)/Chorus (greater things have…)
Mighty to Save – Chorus (Saviour He can move…)/bridge (Shine your light)/Chorus (Saviour…)
God of this City – PreChorus (there is no-one like our God)/Chorus (greater things have…) / Verse
Jesus, Messiah – Bridge (all our hope) / Chorus (Jesus, Messiah)

Romans 12:1 … I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.

And I Stand in Awe (You are beautiful beyond description ) / King of Kings, Majesty

Prayer:

So take us as you find us
All our fears and failures
Fill our lives again

We give our lives to follow You
You’re everything we believe in

We surrender.

Sermon - Brad preached on What remains - Faith, Hope and Love. Great stuff Brad!

We have a general problem of pew warmers. How does your church work on moving folk from singing into action?

It's a life raft not a pleasure cruise...

Now I'm back to answer your question. We have started to design "concrete call to action" plans. I was gone for the first one :(
It was planned for a Sunday that we had a congregational meeting in the evening.
During church we challenged people to go out after church and go shopping for items needed at a local shelter. Socks, towels, diapers and other stuff. And then bring it to the congregational meeting that evening.
We had a handout listing what was needed.
The response was overwhelming. We thought we would need a truck or two, we wound up needing 4 trucks!
It's a small step, but man people stepped up. My small group delivered the bounty.
My mind is still working on figuring out the next call to action.

Love the Jesus Messiah/Mighty to Save/God of this City medley.

What key do you sing those in for them to work as a medley?

Thanks all for your comments. Really useful.

@Matt...I'm definitely going to check it out. $15 is a little tight for us - around ZAR105 + forex charges, though...just a small church but you never know... ;).

@firstthought - I think I'll use it more towards Easter and see what else I can combine it with. Four verses with that rhythm just don't work for me unless you change it up a key each time.

@Steph - it was FANTASTIC - first time we've done it. I have no idea what key. Can find out and get back to you. I hear them in my head and then our wonderful guitarist makes it happen. I don't plan an instrument.

@dorothy - hey - what a great idea. We've done similar stuff, for example, for a Zimbabwe team. I'm also always amazed at the response. I'm more interested in getting people up and using their gifts in various ministries. Could still use your concrete call to action as a stimulus though. Going to give that some thought.
